a) General:

Different books require or have available either b&w or color photos --- either is fine.

For: B&W: We prefer glossy prints and we accept whatever sizes are available. Of course we can also convert color prints into B&W. If possible we prefer 5 x 7 inch format or larger, but most historic shots for biographies come from old photo albums and if that is all that is available -- we can work with that.

For: Color: Here we get more 'fussy' depending upon the use. Again for biographies etc. we have to accept what is available --- prints, slides etc. We can of course also use images that are already scanned --- see below. For high quality art books we obviously want the original material since it will be the best quality.

b) Specific Projects:

Raptor and other Bird Photos Needed:

Hancock House Publishers is preparing several large encyclopedias:

Captive Raptor Management & Rehabilitation by Richard Naisbitt & Dr. Peter Holz (plus many other worldwide contributors)

Needed: All raptor species for identification, captive shots showing keeping, handling, housing, breeding, training & conditioning and 'repairing'.

Encyclopedia of Aviculture by Glen Holland & many other worldwide contributors

Needed: All bird species for identification plus captive shots featuring housing, keeping and breeding techniques. Also need male, female, juvenile. We prefer 35mm slides but can use prints or 350 ppi scans at 3 x 5 inch size.

Pheasants of the World by Keith Howman

Needed: 600-700 new color photos of every age, sex and sub-species variant.
This is a completely revised edition of this classic book, and will feature up-to-date aviculture info, plus additional chapters on pheasant conservation in the wild and captivity.

Encyclopedia of Game Farming by Clive Roots

Needed: This 3 volume set will utilize 1000+ photos of each of Mammals, Birds & Herps. We particularly want shots showing good enclosures as well as identification tips (m / f/ Ad / juv. etc)
Species Needed: all the world's: Birds, Mammals, Herps etc.

Remuneration

Hancock House will credit both the photographer & institution and give a $5 credit to the purchase of any Hancock House books. Or we will provide the photographer (if you have a large number of photos) with CD's of high resolution scans of all your shots.

How Hancock House needs to Receive Slides, Prints or Scans and Captions:

Original Material Required:

1. We prefer to receive original slides -- sharp & clear. Identified!
2. We can use glossy prints
3. Scan Preparation: We can also use scans --- BUT they must be made as noted below.
4. Slide Identification:

Scan Preparation: Details on Preparing Digital Images for Reproduction in Books:

VERY IMPORTANT!

This explanation is presented to help avoid confusion between many people's understanding of high res scans that are used for displaying images on monitors or sending jpgs in email or printing to a desktop inkjet printer and the MUCH more detailed scans needed for reproducing images in printed books. We can ONLY utilize high res scans, as defined below, that are useful for our book production.

1. Scan photos at 4" x 6"(or 10 x 15 cm) image size (=our maximum size on the book page) at 300-350 dpi resolution along each axis so that the final scanned file is approximately 6-7 megabytes in size ((this means that there are about 1200 pixels along the 4 inch axis and 1800 p along the other -- these are the dimensions listed under Properties of your scan. If the final dimensions after scanning read about 328p x 250p this is of no use to us --- only usable for screen, web or desktop printer use.

2. Take the 6 to 7 meg tiff file, store it directly on a CD as an uncompressed tiff and send us the CD OR contact us and we will give you instructions for our FTP site. However, we would prefer to make the high resolution scans ourselves directly from your slides or prints.

Slide Identification: (and Captions)

RE Captions: Where possible please include on separate sheet of paper (to be emailed) the following and at the very least mark on the slide the Slide # and Photographer name.

a - Photo # ((please make sure each photo has # & Photocredit at minimum))
b - Scientific Name - Genus, species, + (subsp.-)
c - Common Name (Spanish-or other- + English)
d - Site of Photo: for zoo or aviary credit where photo was taken.
e - Geographic location of shot: If shot in WILD -- to assist in defining caption or subspecies-
f - Photogapher (=credit line)

Please email us these captions: If these captions are either emailed to us or sent on a disk with the slides then we can copy this data set for each slide into the program that manages the scan images. We MUST obviously tie in the credits to the scans and doing a cut & paste job means less conversion error at this end.

Cumulus: We use the database manager Cumulus for managing the scan data base. We will ultimately end up with the scan with the Caption data "attached" to the scan record in our Cumulus files.

RE OUR USE: we would only be acquiring "non-exclusive world rights" for our publications meaning you could sell it anywhere at any time and we could publish it in our books -- which get world wide distribution.
